Posted by roythom On August - 15 - 2008

For over 100 years conventional medicine has seized control of the US health care system and as a result we have over 800,000 people who are killed by interacting with this system. It is likely that over 50 million Americans have died prematurely from this abuse.

What health problems can cats cause to humans?

Posted by roythom On August - 15 - 2008

I was wondering if cats living in squalor can pose a health problem to those around them. I have a neighbour with mental health problems who keeps a large number of cats. She does not clean up after them and there is sometimes a horrendous smell of urine and faeces that comes out of her home and invades our homes. She lives two flats away from me and I can sometimes smell her home through the pipe work. This has been going on for years. Others have told me that cats can cause health problems but I wasn't sure. Any ideas?

Very interesting question..probably one that needs to be researched especially in this person's case. I would imagine that the urine and feces that she does not clean up could become very unhealthy to be around..even breathing the air. Has anyone reported this situation to the humane society or is there an association where you live that would get involved and help resolve this problem? I would be worried also. The only thing that I have ever heard of concerning cats causing health problems to humans other than the obvious "allergies" is that when a woman is pregnant, doctors recommend that the pregnant woman does not change the litter box..they suggest having someone else do it. The reason for this is because how some cats eat mice and other rodents that carry diseases and of course it goes through the cat's digestive system and ends up in the litter box. When I was pregnant with my 22 year old son, the doctor asked me if I had a cat at my first visit. I didn't, but I was curious why he asked. He told me that there is a condition or disease called Toxoplasmosis that a pregnant woman can pass to her fetus if she comes into contact with the feces of a cat that eats mice. Now this has been a long time ago and I haven't heard anything else about it since but I am sure there is plenty of info about it on the internet. Oh yeah, when my 13 year old son was 5 months old, he developed a red, swollen bump under his arm..in the armpit area. I took him to the doctor immediately and they asked if we owned a cat..no again(not a cat person)..or if he had been around any cats. I told the doctor that he had never been around a cat and they said that they were going to run some tests to see what was going on and that they would also test him for "Cat Scratch Fever". Until then I thought that there was no such thing. They said it can be fatal though. Fortunately, he didn't have it and I knew he had had no contact with any cats but it was still scary and it ended up being an infected lymph node or gland.
I apologize for my long answer..but these are the things that I am aware of and I hope this helps some. I would hate to have to live there near that mess…I hope that you can find someone that can fix the problem..this can't be healthy for the person that lives in the house with the cats or you since you can smell it so strongly through the pipe work. It just seems like it could cause some sort of respiratory problems if you are breathing it. I hope it works out for you.

I don't get insurance through work but I saw something online for health and dental plans. They seem a lot cheaper than getting insurance on my own.

Has anyone tried this? Is there a catch I'm not seeing?

Thanks!

With a dental plan the company sponsoring the plan doesn't pay out anything. With dental insurance the insurance company pays the dentist.

You have five options with dental.

1. Go without insurance. If you have good teeth and just want the basics you probably don't need any plan. A yearly cleaning, exam and even an occasional filling will cost you less without insurance.

2. Visit a local dental school. You can get many procedures done for a reduced price if you're willing to let them practice on you. You can find one here: http://www.yourhealthplanadvisor.com/Dentalschools.html

3. Insurance - Depending upon the policy: cost $30-$60 per month. You pay a $50 deductible first, they have an annual maximum that they'll pay per year of $750 - $1500, they have a waiting period up to 18 months for major work and then you're paying 50% of the charges. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $919. With insurance you pay $460 after paying 18 months of premium (around $800 or $900). Advantage - you can use any dentist with most plans.

4. Discount plans - Cost - $5-$12 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Also, hardly any dentists will accept the plan and when they do you MIGHT get a 10% discount, which is about the same discount you can get by paying cash. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $919. With discount plans you pay around $827. Be very wary of these plans because most are scams. The people that sell these plans have little or no knowledge about health & dental insurance and do not need a license to sell them. The plans are not regulated by the state so you have no recourse when you have problems. Some states are starting to ban these plans from being sold. Here is an informative link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2006/11/22/74554.htm concerning these plans.

5. Fee for Service discount plans - Cost $7-$15 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Many dentist will accept the plan (check providers first before signing up with any plan). When you use the plan there is a set fee that the dentist will charge you. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $919. With fee for service plans you pay as little as $404.

I'm an insurance agent and my personal plan is the fee for service plan. I got mine here http://www.dpbrokers.com/default.aspx?locationid=20349 specifically the Aetna Dental Access plan but which one you get depends upon your area and comparing the fee schedule to find the best for what you need covered.

Hi, I have never bought health insurance before, and I would like to know how I could find out if a particular health insurance provider would cover the costs of me going to a dermatologist and getting Accutane. Can anyone help me?

Humana offers an individual plan in which you would pay a $50.00
copay for this drug if you are approved and no limitations are provided by underwriting department.

You will have to admit during application you have acne, though

Also, this plan is not available in all states.

How does the current health care system in America work?

Posted by roythom On August - 15 - 2008

I know there is a huge debate about universal health care and such on health care reform in America. But what is it that makes sparked this reform? How does the current system work and what it wrong with it? I'm trying to find the answers online, but I can't find anything that can answer my question. Thank you for all responses!

I have to a do a nutrition project for nursing school and I have to write something on the following question but I can't figure out what the 2 public health concerns may be. Any help?

What are 2 public health concerns that have a bearing on nutritonal status?

Salmonella tomatoes…

and other bad fruits and veggies…

how can i tell if my health insurance benefits are pre taxed?

Posted by roythom On August - 15 - 2008

Keep in mind, your health insurance premiums can't be deducted if they're taken out of your paycheck as pre-tax dollars. However, after-tax health insurance premiums are deductible, but they still are subject to a limitation of 7.5% of your AGI. If you're self-employed, you may deduct a portion of your health insurance premiums as an adjustment. The self-employed deductible portion is 100% in 2007.

Ask your employer. They will tell you. Actually they should provide a form for you to sign every year verifying your benefit selections and how you want to have your healthcare premiums treated.

Nearly all healthcare insurance through a job are part of a Section 125 plan and are deducted pre-tax. You generally have the option to pay them with tax paid dollars but I'm at a loss to explain how that could be beneficial to anyone.

What health rules do you have to follow to ship a human body?

Posted by roythom On August - 15 - 2008

If a person living in the USA dies and they want to be buried in their homeland (Jamaica for example), what health rules need to be complied with for the body to be boxed and shipped? Does the body need to be treated/prepared for burial before it is shipped? Do they put it on the same airplane that people and baggage is carried on? Is it normal for dead bodies to be on an airplane with civilian passengers without notifying them?

embalmed, hermetically sealed inner casket which is then placed in an outer casket/container (e.g. "airtray" which is wood base & fiberboard carton top, or wood crate)

yes, on same plane as regular pax. Yes, no notification to other pax (what purpose would that serve?)

What are the emergency health interventions for Diabetes ?

Posted by roythom On August - 15 - 2008

If diabetic is planning to attend a walk a thon or outdoor activities…, what preparation need to occur to ensure health safety ???

What are the emergency health interventions for Hypertension ?

if a diabetic is planning to walk and he/she is taking insulin or any anti-diabetic meds, then he/she needs to have snacks before the walk-a-thon or outdoor acitivities….

in this way, the medication he is taking will lower his blood sugar while the snacks that he will take will keep him from too much hypoglycemia…

for hypertension?? just rest… watch out for extremes of blood pressure. just make sure, he/she takes her usual routinary meds so as to prevent crisis.
