Why Self Improvement Is Important - Part 2

Posted by roythom On September - 18 - 2008

There are people who consider ongoing education essential, who think that in order to really feel alive, they must be growing, developing and learning. They may not be even be seeking self improvement as such, or looking to make any changes in their lives. They may just have a thirst for knowledge and feel that lifelong learning is a goal in itself.

Not everyone is that way inclined, but any person whose personal knowledge is not, at the very least, keeping up with the general knowledge and developments in their field, runs the risk of losing their job, and then having difficulty in finding a new one.

People who are ambitious and have plans for their future know that the most important and valuable work they will ever do is the work they do on themselves. To quote Jim Rohn – "To Have More Than You've Got, Become More Than You Are".

Self Improvement is undoubtedly important, and anyone really can have anything they want from life, and be anything they want to be, if they're prepared to make the plans, take the actions, and pay the price.

Time and money spent on furthering your own education, skills and knowledge will be the best investment you'll ever make for your future. It's been said many times that leader are readers. It's also been said that any problem that you could ever have has been solved by someone, and that the solution will have been recorded for posterity.

Whatever it is you want to know, you can almost certainly find recorded it in a book, on the internet, or in another medium. You can gain knowledge that would otherwise take you many years of experience and trial and error to obtain simply by reading a single book written by an expert.

No matter what you want to achieve from your life, there is no doubt that the more books you read, the more audio programs you listen to, the more seminars or courses you attend, the more you will know about your specialist field or area of interest. You will become highly employable and earn more within your chosen field, or will be well placed to move into new areas, or to set up and successfully run your own business.

Only you can decide what you want from your life and what will make you happy. Nobody else is responsible for your happiness, your success, or what you make of your life. And nobody else is responsible for your lack of happiness or success, or if you do nothing more with your life than just about get by.

The important thing to realize is that it's all your choice, and that your attitude to personal development, growth and self education will be one of the most decisive factors in how your life turns out.

"If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place." – Nora Roberts

Why Self Improvement Is Important - Part 1

Posted by roythom On August - 21 - 2008

Many people have goals, dreams or ambitions but don't know how to go about achieving them. They may have thought about what would make up their ideal life, but have no idea how to even begin to make the plans and take the actions required to make them a reality.

Some people have a vague idea of their ideal life, and believe that if only they had a better job, or had been given better opportunities, or met the love of their life, or whatever else, everything would be fine and they would be happy. They feel that their happiness or lack of happiness is decided by external factors and their thoughts and actions are of little consequence.

Some believe that if only they had more money they could have whatever they want and would be happy. They may have spent little time thinking about what they actually want from life, and don't really believe there is anything they can do to create their fuzzy version of utopia anyway, apart from buying more lottery tickets.

Other people don't even know what they actually want from their lives and may even have little idea what would really makes them happy. They seem to just drift from day to day, week to week, month to month, and year to year, and do little more than just about get by. They may have seemingly secure jobs and be earning enough to live relatively comfortable lives. They seem happy enough and have no great ambition to achieve anything more from their lives than they currently have.

So is Self Improvement Important?

The reality is that throughout our lives we are all constantly growing and developing. Circumstances make us grow and develop, even if we don't make the conscious decision to do so. Up to a certain age, we learn through formal education and we continue to learn through our experiences for the rest of our lives. We have to learn and grow to deal with everything that life throws at us.

Modern life moves at a dramatically faster pace than at anytime in history. For anyone living in modern society there are more opportunities to do anything that you want to do with your life than ever before. But there is also more competition than ever before, and ever changing technology means that there really are few, if any 'jobs for life' anymore. It's now normal not only to change jobs quite often throughout our working lives, but even to completely change careers and/or industries.

Because the workplace is so competitive, people who are ambitious and hungry for success know they need to learn new skills and knowledge to keep ahead of the pack. These are the people that will be most likely to keep their jobs, or progress within their chosen field, or that will be readily employable in different organizations or industries.

An alarming percentage of people spend most of what they earn, and with the easy availability of credit, many also have large debts. They are often no more that a few paydays away from bankruptcy and have little, if anything, put aside for emergencies, much less for a comfortable retirement.

A commitment to self improvement and personal growth may well be the deciding factor in how anyone's future turns out.

"Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for." – Socrates

Self - Improvement……?

Posted by roythom On August - 16 - 2008

ok…I want more for myself and my kids….
I am taking college class part time right now…but not 100 % sure about my major…
I DO know I want a better life…Will the rest fall into place?

Oh don't worry about anything. This is just a beginning for you. I as panicking as well when I started college and felt like I would never finish it. Everything would def fall into place - later you'll figure out what you want to become and it may not necessarily happen while you're in college (believe it or not). Best of luck!

I'm about to enter a new career in sales and I have a huge collection of all kinds of motivation/self improvement and sales/negotiation training materials. Audio, video and books.

However, in the *real* world, what have people found to be highly useful and workable? If you are a high achiever sales/negotiation wise-what if any would you recommend to a newcomer?

I'm looking at business to business telesales as a starting point and hope to add face to face relationship building as I progress.

At the moment I've a list of authors a mile long and I've listened to a fair amount. However having not field tested it all, I could be in fantasy land as to would work :-).

Thank you in advance for any assistance. UK based
I do like Frank Bettger's book. I acquired this off an old business pal of mine. Charming and sounds realistic. Dale Carnegie is another I do like.

The other recommendations are appreciated as I hadn't yet seen them. Thank you.
Thank you Ken. John Maxwell I hadn't come across either so far.

Covey, I have his audio which I listened to twice a couple of weeks ago whilst doing a fairly long hands on job. I have his book, that I'm using to revise what I heard :-).

Here's my Top Five:

"How I raised myself from Failure to Success in Selling" by
Frank Bettger
"How to have Confidence and Power when dealing with People" by Les Geblin
"How to win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie
"Personality Plus" by Florence Littauer
"The Magic of Thinking Big" by David Schwartz

After getting commissioned as a officer what should be the sphere of emphasis that the young officer has to concentrate on to develope his leadership traits and qualities as a leader to enhance his standing within his unit, his subordinates, peers and superior officers with greater relevance to self improvement and self development personally and professionally.

The best thing he can hope for is a quality Platoon Sergeant…if he has one…and he is willing to pay attention and listen, that man will teach him everything he needs to know and then some. The Company First Sergeant and the Battalion Sergeant Major are also good resources…
But if you go in like a know it all…you are in for a hard time.
I'll tell you what I always told young Lieutenants, you are in charge but this is MY platoon. If I tell you what you are about to do is stupid and you tell me you are in charge and we are gonna do it your way you remember this….
The Battalion Commander is not going to come to you when it is screwed up, he will come to me and ask why did you let that Lieuteanat do that.
I hope that gives you some perspective on how it really is.

I am currently on a campaign for self-improvement. A lot of aspects are involved. One aspect is improving my financial picture. I have over $10k in savings. I have about $2k in my 401k. I have no IRAs, and I currently make $12.50/hour at my job, with a promise of a raise once I receive my bachelor's degree in engineering. I am 23 years old.

I am wanting to do anything I can now to build a healthier financial picture in order to assist in other aspects of my life, now and in the future. I can provide more details if need be. Any suggestions?

Confused, u sound right on track for financial security in just a few yrs.
i'll suggest a visit to daveramsey.com to learn what most 50 yr old have to unlearn.
suggest u never deal with any one who can not express to you what / how they plan to increase ur money and be understood by a 15 yr old. lots of fancy talking 'smart' broke folks out there.
read '48 days to work u love' good info u need soon. 'the millionarie next door' 'the richest man in babylon' ' how to win friends and influence people' 'think and grow rich' 'the tortise and hare'.
these are books most working paycheck to paycheck 'degreed professionals' never read and wonder why they are never getting a head.
